So you set yourself a goal to get that six-pack you’ve always wanted. You’ve had a few failed attempts at it in the past, but this time it’s going to be different. You’re more fired up than ever before, you know you can do it if you apply yourself and now’s the time to go get it.

You’ve spent your time finding your new training plan and nutrition guidelines and you’re pumped to make it happen!

You kick off your new program and the first few weeks fly by with minimal interruptions. You’re kicking ass, you feel great and there ain’t nothing stopping you from getting that six-pack this time round.

The next 4 weeks roll by and things start to become a little harder. You’re still on track BUT work seems to be taking up more time than you had planned and you’re starting to get fed up with having to continually think about your nutrition, make time for training, plan out your meals and you feel you’re always skipping out on all the fun stuff in life.

HOWEVER – you told yourself you’ll get a six-pack this year so you keep on grinding.

By the end of week 6 things are pretty stale. You look in the mirror and you don’t notice much (if any) physical change. There seem to be a lot more social engagements and ‘things’ to attend than there were before and sticking to those nutrition guidelines has become a chore.

At this stage you’re motivation is taking a dive, you’re questioning whether getting a six-pack is worth the ‘hassle’. That drive and energy you had back at the beginning, that passion you felt around getting a six-pack is long gone.

And by the end of week 6 you’ve decided you need a break to enjoy some of the ‘fun’ things in life. You take most of the week off from training, you attend a number of the functions that are happening and enjoy your favourite meals and beverages. You tell yourself you’ll be back on track next week, that you’re just having a ‘taste’ of the old life to quench those cravings.

UNFORTUNATELY, next week never comes. That ‘little’ break turns into what I call a ‘de-flection’ point – it’s when everything starts to head south. Your 1 week off becomes 2, then 3 and well as we’re all aware we never actually pick up thereafter. We’re back into old patterns, old habits and ‘cruising’ through life without a six-pack once again.

And then a few weeks later, after that lifestyle has gotten stale once again you set yourself a goal to get that six-pack you’ve always wanted. You’ve had a few failed attempts at it in the past, but this time it’s going to be different. You’re more fired up than ever before, you know you can do it if you apply yourself and now’s the time to go get it…

A familiar story right?!

I’ve coached a lot of guys that told me that one of the main issues they have when it comes to getting the physique of their dreams is they continue to ‘fall off the wagon’. They’d come to me telling me they seem to be able to start a new program, they have great short term success but gradually fall back into old patterns and then all of a sudden they’re back almost at where you started. And the cycle continues…

I’ve been in this game for over a decade, I’ve set goals I never thought I could achieve and just made it happen, I also set smaller easier goals that I thought I would nail only to fail at them. So over the years I’ve spent a lot of time and money on understanding what it is that helps us achieve ‘goals’.

So what causes us as guys to fail over and over again? Is it that ‘difficult’ that only a select few seem to have the ‘drive’ to achieve what it takes?

I don’t believe that for a second. The truth is that you’ve actually NEVER BEEN TAUGHT how to set a GOAL PROPERLY. We usually see it as an end point, but there is a lot more to it and I’m going to share that knowledge with you right now.

I honestly believe that any guy out there can achieve greatness in any aspect of their life IF THEY KNOW WHY THEY WANT.

And it’s here that the game changes. While setting a ‘GOAL’ is a great start, it’s not the end of the matter and unfortunately this is where we come unstuck.

You see we’ve been taught that you simply set a GOAL, create a PLAN to achieve that GOAL and then follow the PLAN. What happens however is that life starts to pull you away from the PLAN. It makes the PLAN difficult to follow and the diversions life offers are much EASIER to chase. That GOAL all of a sudden becomes a distant memory for a small period of time until it’s out of reach again and you’re back to square 1.

When it comes to getting the physique of your dreams, you could have the worlds best program sitting in front of you right now, telling you what to lift, when to run and what to eat, however if you don’t have the right mindset and motivation triggers in place, it’s as good as useless.

Setting a GOAL is only half the battle, because when the going gets tough, you need to really understand WHY you need to achieve that GOAL in order to be able to get through the hurdles that life throws at you.

Essentially in order to achieve success you need to be able to answer questions like:

  • WHY DO I TRAIN?
  • WHY DO I EAT WHAT I EAT?
  • WHY AM I TRYING TO ACHIEVE MY SPECIFIC GOAL?

Once you have your WHY, THEN you have your MOTIVATION:
The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. The general desire or willingness of someone to do something.

Where most guys are coming unstuck is that they feel that they’re desire to ‘get a six pack’, ‘get a cover model body’, ‘look like Tyler Durden from fight club’ is the MOTIVATION, and that once they have that GOAL in place all they need to do is follow a plan. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, and having a goal like this (while it’s better than nothing at all) is actually no better than saying ‘you want a million dollars in your bank account’.

You see, once you pick that goal and you start on that journey, things are going to get challenging, the training will intensify, the nutrition will be harder than you ever thought, you’ll still have all the restrictions of work and everything else life throws at you and when a little spanner gets thrown into the works (you need to travel for work for a week and there’s no gym, your best mate is in town for a week and he want you attending fun dinners and parties etc) it’s very easy to come unstuck and begin that downward spiral I mentioned earlier.

However when you have your WHY in place, when you truly understand the reason behind the need of your GOAL then things will start to change. When the heat is on, work is crazy busy, life is out of control and all you want to do is hit the pub, smash some pizza and skip training, you can revert back to your WHY.

Having a WHY in place is a game changer. It will seriously help you jump hurdles that normally have you come unstuck.

GOAL: To get as shredded as possible over the next 12 weeks while maintaining as much muscle mass as possible.

WHY: I want to prove to others that it can be done no matter what age or life stage you’re at. I want to share what I learn with other guys to help inspire and motivate them to do the same.

Makes sense right? If I just had a goal in place to get shredded, I can tell you there have been many weeks where I would have just given up. When life goes crazy (which is just about every day) and you’re dealing with 2 little kids, a frantic wife, co-workers, bosses, friends, family and other commitments it’s pretty easy to see why it’s so easy to FAIL.

When I put my WHY in place, I was able to persevere, I was able to prioritise my training, my nutrition and my mindset because I had a WHY that I wholeheartedly believe in.

You’ll often hear and see stories of how someone went from rock bottom to the top. Someone who was always trying to achieve a goal they had in mind (let’s say lose weight) but had never been able to. Then at some point in their time they had a life threatening experience. From this experience they had no choice but to change the way they were living (They now had a WHY) and started to achieve their goals.

So today/tonight or sometime this week I want you to think about your WHY for the year ahead when it comes to fitness and health. You can and should have multiple WHY’s for the various elements of life (relationships, finance etc), but I want you to do this for your fitness and health GOALS specifically.

If you want to make 2015 the best year ever, the year when you proudly walk around displaying your new amazing six-pack, then you need to ask yourself WHY do you want one?

Remember that your WHY needs to resonate with you, it needs to stir up your inner beast and ignite that fire in your belly. Find that WHY, write it down, remind yourself of it each and every day and watch as success begins to unfold.

I found having my WHY always on the back of mind helps me immensely. Those times when all you want to do is have a bowl of ice cream, a few donuts and a few beers strikes you because everyone else is. It’s at this time that you need to call on your WHY. Why WOULD I SAY NO TO THIS? IS saying No a better outcome than saying YES? When you understand the power of this, your mindset changes. It’s not easy, and you’re constantly having battles, but over time it becomes easier because you’re developing new ‘habits’ which we’ll leave for another conversation.

Remember:
Achieving such a goal requires the ability to persist through obstacles and endurance to keep going in spite of difficulties.
